Last June 20-21, 2023, the JRRMMC Department of Dermatology, National Specialty Center for Dermatology was visited by around 40 esteemed doctors from Nagasaki University who attended an insightful lecture about Leprosy and Common Infectious Diseases in the Philippines given by Dr. Sayo-Aguiling at San Lazaro Hospital and had hands-on clinical discussion with our residents as part of the Tropical Medicine course facilitated by Nagasaki University.

The course provided an increased understanding of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases prevalent in Asian tropical countries, as well as wider public health issues.Furthermore, the doctors had a glimpse of our outpatient department including all the sections of dermatology.

Our honorary consultant Dr. Ma. Luisa Abad- Venida also discussed some infectious disease cases at our conference room through a small group discussion to answer questions, raise awareness, and share ideas.

With heartfelt delight, we are grateful to foster collaboration and connection with our esteemed colleagues from Japan.

The Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center National Specialty Center for Dermatology Infectious disease unit recognizes the importance of promoting awareness to Leprosy or Hansen’s Disease.

We are celebrating World Leprosy Day with various week long activities which include daily lay forums, a raffle of advocacy merchandise to patients and staff of the hospital and the first FACE TO FACE HD CLUB get together since the pandemic.

It was nice to see new and old faces in one place - to play games, have a meal together, share and enjoy each others' talents & finally, to hear each and everyone's heartwarming stories about their experience with leprosy. The path to healing takes time but we empathize with all our patients and we will continue to be by your side throughout your whole journey.

As we celebrate the 70th World Leprosy Day which will be held on January 29, 2023, rest assured that this department will continue to be vigilant in promoting awareness about this curable disease.

Together, we will act now to end leprosy.

Medical Mission November 2022

The Skin Research Foundation of the Philippines (SRF), in cooperation with Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center Department of Dermatology, conducted its medical mission for the visually-impaired through the Philippine Blind Union and Federation of Quezon City Blind Massage Therapists at the DSWD - NCR National Vocational and Rehabilitation Center in Project 4, Quezon City on November 26, 2022.
Dr. Ma. Flordeliz Abad-Casintahan, our beloved chairperson and president of the Skin Research Foundation, opened the event by welcoming everyone and expressing our heartfelt thanks to the community for the opportunity to serve them. This was followed by a Skin Care Lecture by Dr. Aimee Cara Vergara (pre-resident) in which the patients learned how to take care of their skin and to prevent some common skin problems.
A total of 120 individuals, including visually-impaired patients and their families, received consultations, medicines and procedures such as electrocautery. This was followed by a feeding program.
Every year, the department always looks for opportunities to reach out and bring our service and expertise to a community which needs it the most. It warms and fills our hearts to be able to share our blessings, spread hope, and impart kindness to those in need. This inspires us to be better and be more compassionate as physicians and as members of society.
It is truly our deepest honor to be the eyes of the visually-impaired people during this short time that we were able to serve them. They might have lost one of the senses that sometimes we take for granted, but we, dermatologists, are always here to care for the skin lesions that they might feel but cannot see.
To our JRRMMC Dermatology alumni and sponsors, pharmaceutical companies, and families who shared their generous blessings and unending support for this endeavour, we are expressing our utmost gratitude and appreciation for the help they have extended for the fruition of this activity.

Cutis Malignitas

Cutis Malignitas is a skin cancer forum for health care workers, held on October 25, 2022. This forum elaborates on the basics of skin cancer, from signs and symptoms, risk factors, diagnostic modalities, to treatment. Through this activity, we empower healthcare workers in the early detection, preliminary work-up, and appropriate referral for any malignancy of the skin.

Outreach Program March 2022

“It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”

― Mother Theresa

The Skin Research Foundation of the Philippines Inc., together with Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center Department of Dermatology held a Love.Serve.Care outreach program last March 17, 2022 for children bravely battling cancer at the National Children’s Hospital and at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center.

Personalized Love.Serve.Care. bags were distributed containing essential items such as food, masks, hygiene products, as well as educational materials.

Each child also received a teddy bear which brought wide smiles and twinkling eyes to their faces. We hope that every time they hug their fluffy companion, they will be reminded that they are not alone and that we truly care for them.

We came in bearing gifts but we left with our hearts filled to the brim with joy and love seeing their happy faces. It is always an honor to be able to make these brave soldiers smile amidst everything.

May the future allow us to be of service to more people in need.

Kinaadman Multidimensional Dermatological Approach Transcending Eras:18th Postgraduate Course of the JRRMMC Department of Dermatology

The Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center Department of Dermatology, in cooperation with the Skin Research Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. held its 18th Postgraduate Course entitled Kinaadman Multidimensional Dermatological Approach Transcending Eras last July 9-10, 2021 via digital platform. The course aims to impart current advancements in the diagnosis and management of dermatologic diseases, as well as the modern approach to aesthetic treatment to ensure quality patient care. It is imperative, especially in the dynamic practice of dermatology, to continuously equip ourselves with innovative and up-to-date methods to provide care to our patients.

The  first day of the virtual postgraduate course, hosted by Dr. Kara Melissa Torres-Culala, was opened by our esteemed Dr. Ma. Flordeliz Abad-Casintahan, and the varied keynote lectures were moderated by Dr. Melanie Joy Doria-Ruiz.  In the morning, Dr. Stanley A. Chua shared his expertise on the complementary approach to pruritus and provided insight on a more integrative approach to the management of difficult cases of persistent pruritus. He began with a comprehensive breakdown of the different causes of pruritus, such as breakdown of structural barriers, poor or over-nutrition, and abnormal histamine release, and later on provided complementary methods to address each of these etiologies. Dr. Hester Gail Lim-Bueser provided a discussion on the significant clinical and histologic characteristics of the skin from from infancy to senescence. She discussed how these in turn cause particular functional changes in the skin, and provided evidence-based means to approach the otherwise basic principle of cleansing, moisturizing and ensuring protection.  Dr. Allen  Aguinaldo-Cabrera gave an interactive presentation on the management of acne scars, showing different treatment modalities such as subcision, punch techniques, soft tissue filler, platelet rich plasma, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, microneedling, ablative and non-ablative laser treatments performed on actual clinical cases.

In the afternoon, Dr. Zharlah Gulmatico-Flores gave a thorough discussion of the biochemical changes in the skin brought about by menopause. She shed light on the visible and palpable effects of these molecular changes in the status of the skin and how these can influence wound healing, hair cycles, and aging and the status of other conditions in the woman such dermatitis and acne. Dr. Irene Gaile Robredo-Vitas gave an interesting discussion on cosmetic and reconstructive vaginal rejuvenation. She gave a very interactive presentation showing the step-by-step process of performing each of the available non-surgical and minimally invasive methods on patients with intimate pigmentation and intimate flaccidity concerns.

The second day of the virtual postgraduate course was  hosted by Dr. Ron Michael P. Dagala and moderated by Dr. Elaine Marie Gutierrez-Villaroman. Dr. Ma. Cricelda M. Rescober-Valencia commenced with a Filipino Skin Lecture Series, unmasking three unusual dermatologic masqueraders, including cutaneous metastasis presenting as solitary nodule on the scalp, mycetoma presenting as nodules and tumors on the left foot, and syphilis presenting as an annular plaque on the face. Dr. Marie Socouer L. Medina-Oblepias lectured on the pathophysiology of post inflammatory erythema, and the different treatment options which comprise lasers, intense pulse light, fractional microneedling radiofrequency, tranexamic acid, vitamin c, alpha adrenoreceptor agonist, and other topical agents like azelaic acid, niacinamide and silicone gel.

Dr. Ma. Cristina A. Puyat discussed the different endogenous and exogenous factors contributing to periorbital hyperpigmentation. She showcased how she approaches the ever-changing preferences of patients when it comes to periorbital rejuvenation from topical treatment to minimally invasive procedures.  Dr. Johannes F. Dayrit shared his extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with laser-assisted drug delivery and its varied uses in various skin conditions such as actinic keratosis, melasma, basal cell carcinoma, vitiligo and alopecia areata. Dr. Aivee Aguilar-Teo showcased a multitude of medical and aesthetic breakthroughs for non-invasive body contouring including laser lipolysis, monopolar radiofrequency, cryolipolysis, high intensity focused electromagnetic technology plus synchronized targeted radiofrequency and coolwaves microwave technology. The virtual postgraduate course was concluded with a message of gratitude and appreciation to all delegates, organizing committee, and sponsors from our esteemed Dr. Daisy King-Ismael.

The JRRMMC Dermatology family is deeply grateful to all the speakers and delegates for taking part in making this first ever virtual course a success. It is our hope that with the Kinaadman imparted by our speakers in this postgraduate course, delegates will be more equipped to provide the best care to each of their patients, especially in these ever-changing times. Daghang salamat sa tanan!

“And suddenly, you know its time to start something new and the magic of new beginnings”

alt alt alt

Parasols, cherry blossoms, and opulent garments paraded the halls as the JRRMMC Department of Dermatology held its Graduation Rites and Christmas Party last December 19 with the theme 'Oriental Opulence.'

alt alt

alt

The night was devoted to celebrate the seniors residents' commitment and invaluable service to both the department and their patients. To the graduating physicians namely Dr. Katherine Joy Sayo-Aguiling, Dr. Janelle G. Go, Dr. Ma. Christina B. Gulfan, Dr. Jasmine Malla, Dr. Riza R. Milante, Dr. Mark Gerald R. Serrano, Dr. Abhishek Singh and our Dermatopathology Fellow, Dr. Margaret Mary B. Alegre, congratulations! Over the years, they have undoubtedly grown in this noble calling and have imbibed the core values of integrity, competence and professionalism. It is the hope of the institution that they will carry with them their fervent dedication, passion and excellence as they further their growth well beyond the halls of the hospital.

alt alt alt

alt alt

The night also served as an opportunity to celebrate, share laughs and unwind as we gather as a family. Games, songs and dance presentations and a festive Christmas dinner was enjoyed by all. Truly, there was an air of fun and cheer throughout the evening. Everyone was dressed to impress with their Crazy Rich Asians inspired outfit.

It was a platform to reminisce on good times and remain hopeful of what is ahead. What may be bittersweet end to one chapter may merely be the first steps to a bigger adventure.

Medical Mission November 2018

alt

"Bloom where you are planted."

The Skin Research Foundation of the Philippines, Inc., in cooperation with the Philippine Dermatologic Society and Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center Department of Dermatology, marked the start of the yuletide season of giving by visiting the Haven for Women in Alabang, Muntinlupa last November 10, 2018 via the gift of charity.

The Haven of Women provides temporary shelter and protective custody to women 18-59 years old who are victims of various forms of abuse.

With the leadership of our beloved Chairman, Dr. Ma. Flordeliz Abad-Casintahan, we saw and treated 180 patients with various skin diseases. We also performed various dermatologic surgical procedures totaling to 26 operations such as electrocautery of common warts.

R.S. Grey once said: "She believed she can, so she did." The Haven for Women is an establishment that seeks to empower women whose spirits have been damaged by various forms of abuse such as domestic violence. Women are the flowers of society - where flowers bloom, so does hope. We hoped that by our simple act of generosity, we hope that the flowers who reside in the Haven will push through the dirt and once again bathe in sunlight.
